GIGI AND THE NIGHT SHE MET JUDY GARLAND

“Judy Garland was one of the nicest women I’ve ever met!”

That’s what my Grand Grandma loved to say. Back when she was my age, Gigi (which I liked to call my Great Grandma) loved going to the movies. She especially liked going to movie premiers, where she could see the best movie stars of the time.

One evening, Gigi went to a premier showing of Meet Me In St. Louis, starring Judy Garland and Margaret O’Brien. Judy was there, along with her husband, Vincente Minnelli. Gigi brought with her the sheet music for the movie. After the show was over, Gigi waited with a few other fans as Judy signed autographs.

“Judy, let’s go. It’s getting late,” said her husband.

“I’ll be there in a minute,” she responded, and kept signing autographs for everyone.

When Judy came over to me Gigi said “Hello, Mrs. Garland.”

“Why hello there, little girl. What’s your name?”

“I’m Frances.”

“No kidding? I was born with that name. Do you want my autograph, Frances?”

“I would love to have your autograph.”

“Okay, Frances.”

Judy scribbled her name on the sheet music, and inscribed it “To Frances, with all my love, Judy Garland.”

“Thanks, Judy!” Gigi said as Judy began to walk into her car, waving goodbye to all her fans.

Gigi never forgot that that evening. She loved helping people in need, and was always nice to others.

When I saw her for the last time she tole me “Mary, there may be bad people on Earth who do bad things. But when I hear about all that, I always think about the good things that good people do. And Judy Garland was a very nice woman who did very nice things in her life.”
